| Soil types The site is on an area which is predominantly heavy London clay which is located at varying depths beneath a loamy topsoil. The clay is invariably encountered at depths greater than eighteen inches and its combination with the loam makes for a fertile soil suitable for the cultivation of most garden crops. All the favourites such as potatoes, beans, peas, brassicas, onions, leeks, etc. do reasonably well with a modicum of care. Soft fruits are successfully grown by many members as are tomatoes (though many have suffered from a particularly virulent form of fungal blight in recent years). Maize can be seen on several plots and one or two members have successfully grown more exotic plants such as aubergines, chilli peppers, and sub tropical flowers. One or two members are even cultivating small numbers of grapevines the produce of which is then presumably used to produce their own grand cru! |
